Funny Things to Do With a Cast
Ever wonder what happened to the stars of the movie "Remember the Titans?" Based on a true story, the film depicted a newly integrated high school football team struggling to get along with each other. Eventually the team overcame their personal conflicts and built strong relationships with each other. Many of the football players in the film are based on real people, except for a few made up roles (such as Ryan Gosling's character, Alan Bosley). In addition, some of the events in the movie are also fictionalized.
Some of the film's actors and actresses went on to land major roles, including Ryan Gosling, Hayden Panettiere and Denzel Washington. Let's revisit this classic and see what the cast members have been up to since the film's premiere in 2000.
Denzel Washington (Coach Herman Boone)
Coach Boone character was based on T.C. Williams High School's head football coach in Alexandria, Virginia. In 1971, Boone's became the head coach of the school's football team. His past experience made him the ideal candidate. Boone helped the team achieve a 13–0 season, win the state championship, and take second place at the national championship. Boone was responsible for integrating the football team's busses. "I forced them to learn each other's culture. I forced them to be a part of each other's lives," said Boone.
The movie depicted Boone as an inspirational character. In reality, some former players disagree with that portrayal. Players who quit the football team described Boone as harsh. The film includes a scene where the team wakes up at 3 a.m. to train at the Gettysburg Battlefield, followed by an epic speech by Boone. But players from the actual team revealed this event never took place.
Denzel Washington After the Film
Denzel Washington's portrayal of Coach Herman Boone won him a BET Award, a Black Reel Award, and an Image Award. After "Remember the Titans," Washington went on to star in many successful films including "Training Day," "American Gangster" and "Flight." In addition to acting, Washington directed a few films such as "Antwone Fisher," "The Great Debaters" and "Fences."
Apart from his film work, Washington is also a well-known philanthropist. In 2011, he donated $2 million to the theater department at Fordham University as well as $250,000 in school scholarships.
Will Patton (Assistant Coach Bill Yoast)
Bill Yoast coached in Alexandria, Virginia, for many years. He was expecting the head coach position at T.C. Williams High School, but the school instead offered Boone the position due to racial tensions in the community. At first, Yoast refused the assistant coach job.
Yoast changes his mind about the position when he discovers that the white players from the team planned to boycott football, putting their college scholarships at risk. As the assistant coach, Yoast supports Boone in overcoming the struggles that were crippling the team.
Will Patton After the Film
Following "Remember the Titans," Will Patton continued acting in films such as "Gone in Sixty Seconds" (2000) and "The Punisher" (2004). In 2018, Patton starred in the popular thriller "Halloween" as Frank Hawkins, the Deputy of Haddonfield. Patton also took on supporting roles in TV shows like "Numb3rs," "24" and "The Good Wife." On the TV show "Falling Skies," Patton's character, Captain Dan Weaver, appears in over 50 episodes.
Patton has also narrated many audiobooks, including"The Assault on Reason" by Al Gore in 2007, "Finders Keepers" by Stephen King in 2015, and "Robicheaux" by James Lee Burke in 2018.
Wood Harris (Defensive End Julius Campbell)
Wood Harris played Julius Campbell, the football team's captain. The real Coach Boone spoke highly of Campbell, telling the Washington Post, "Julius was very, very instrumental on that team at simply getting kids to just talk to one another, kids who never talked to kids from another race their entire lives. By doing so, they learned many things about each other that were not passed down to them and for that, the world owes Julius a debt of gratitude."
The movie followed Campbell, the team's African American captain, as he tried to fit into the new school as well as his personal conflicts with the team's white linebacker, Gerry Bertier. The two later became best friends and led their team to become undefeated state champions. According to the Official 1971 Original Titans, the real Campbell and Bertier did form a bond like other players on the team, but they weren't best friends in real life.
Wood Harris After the Film
After starring in "Remember the Titans" as Julius Campbell, Wood Harris landed a role as a cocaine dealer in the film "Paid in Full." He also appeared in big-screen blockbusters, including 2015's "Ant-man," 2015's "Creed," and its 2018 sequel.
Besides acting in films, Harris also took on roles in television series. His most widely known role was in HBO's critically acclaimed crime drama "The Wire," where he played drug kingpin Avon Barksdale. From 2002 to 2008, Harris starred in 33 episodes. In 2018, he landed the role of international money launderer Damon Cross, on the critically acclaimed TV series "Empire."
Ryan Hurst (Linebacker Gerry Bertier)
Gerry Bertier was the team's most valuable defensive player. He was paralyzed from the waist down after a car accident. The mishap took place after Bertier attended a celebration banquet for winning the state championship. The accident was caused by a mechanical failure in his car's engine mount. Bertier later passed away at the age of 27 on March 20, 1981, after a second tragic car accident that involved a drunk driver.
The movie's depiction of the accident differs from what really happened. It showed the accident taking place before the state championship game. Bertier, portrayed by Ryan Hurst, was struck by another vehicle. After the accident, Bertier watches the state championship game on TV and cheered from his hospital bed. The real Bertier played in the championship game; the car accident happened after. The first and last scenes of the movie portray his funeral.

Ryan Hurst portrayed Gerry Bertier in "Remember the Titans." Hurst went on to play Sergeant Ernie Savage in the 2002 film "We Were Soldiers." He also played Tom Clarke in the TV series "Taken" in 2002.
Additionally, Hurst found success in television roles. Hurst played Opie Winston in the FX drama series "Sons of Anarchy" from 2008 to 2014, which which he earned a Satellite Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Series, Miniseries or Television Film, in 2011. Originally a recurring character, Hurst became a mainstay character after season two." Currently, Hurst stars as Beta in AMC's "The Walking Dead," where his costume includes a zombie-skin mask.
Ryan Gosling (Linebacker Alan Bosley)
In the film, Bosley was a made up character. Bosley struggled to sprint on the football field. As a result, Coach Yoast yanked him out of a game. He came back to play during the state semi-finals, but relinquished his position to Petey Jones, who ultimately took home the championship title.
Prior to appearing in "Remember the Titans," Gosling had small parts in several TV shows in the 90s, including "Are You Afraid of the Dark," "Goosebumps," and "Flash Forward." He also starred in a Disney-made prequel to "Hercules," called "Young Hercules" (1998-1999).

Other than Denzel Washington, Ryan Gosling is currently one of the most notable celebrities in Hollywood from "Remember the Titans." Gosling's role was small in the football movie, but he reached superstardom after starring in the romance film "The Notebook" with Rachel McAdams in 2004.
Next, he portrayed a teacher suffering from drug addiction in "Half Nelson" in 2006. He took a temporary hiatus from acting between 2007 to 2010. Upon his return, Gosling continued starring in successful films including "Gangster Squad" in 2013, "La La Land" in 2016, "Blade Runner 2049" in 2017 and "First Man" in 2018. Gosling is also a regular on People magazine's annual "sexiest men alive list.
Ethan Suplee (Offensive Lineman Louie Lastik)
"Remember the Titans" depicts Louie Lastik as a social butterfly who has trouble keeping his grades up. Lastik's most memorable scene in the film involves him singing in the school's cafeteria. Eventually, the character gets his happy ending after his grades improve enough for him to attend college.
Throughout the 90s, Suplee appeared in the Kevin Smith films 'Mallrats" "Chasing Amy," and "Dogma" along with his future "My Name Is Earl" costar Jason Lee. Suplee also portrayed a Nazi skinhead in the film "American History X" and played the reoccurring character of Frankie Stechino in "Boy Meets World."

In 2002, Ethan Suplee teamed up with Denzel Washington again in the film "John Q," which was praised by critics. From 2005-2009 Suplee starred in "My Name Is Earl" as Randy Hickey. In 2011, Suplee discussed his 200-plus pound weight-loss journey with TMZ, crediting his weight loss to bicycling. He had to regain some weight for his role in the 2013 film "Wolf of Wall Street."
In 2016, Suplee appeared in the Netflix TV series "The Ranch" as Officer Billy. He is slated for several upcoming projects, including "Motherless Brooklyn," "Gossamer Folds" and "In Limbo." Suplee is has been married to Brandy Lewis, sister of Juliette Lewis, since 2006.
Kate Bosworth (Emma Hoyt)
In real life, Gerry Bertier didn't have a girlfriend named Emma. The film's producers cast her as an antagonist in the movie. Emma broke up with Gerry when he started bonding with his black teammate Julius, but she slowly came around later on in the film. Emma eventually warms up to Julius.
"Remember the Titans" was only the second film Boswoth appeared in. Her first role, "The Horse Whisperer" was the result of an open casting call in New York City. The producers were looking for an experienced horse rider for the role. Bosworth was an accomplished equestrian, making her perfect for the part.

Kate Bosworth had a small supporting role in the film, but her acting career was just getting started. She gained wider recognition after landing a lead part in "Blue Crush" as a teenage surfer named Anne Marie in 2002. In 2006, Bosworth starred as journalist Lois Lane in "Superman Returns" with Brandon Routh.
Other movies she has worked on include "21" in 2008, "Straw Dogs" in 2011, "Still Alice" in 2014 and "Before I Wake" in 2016. Recently, Bosworth starred in many TV series such as "The Long Road Home" in 2017 and "The I-Land" in 2019. Besides acting, Bosworth worked in the fashion industry. In 2008, Calvin Klein Jeans made Bosworth the brand's new face. Coach, the luxury bag retailer, gave her the spokesperson position in Asia. Bosworth also modeled in Cotton Incorporated and Topshop advertisements.
Hayden Panettiere (Sheryl Yoast)
In the film, Sheryl Yoast loved watching movies with Coach Boone rather than playing with dolls. The movie also depicted Sheryl Yoast as an only child living with her father. However, in reality, Sheryl Yoast had three sisters and lived with her mother. Sheryl Yoast's oldest sister, Bonnie, attended college in 1971. Angela, the second oldest sister, went to another high school. Deidre, the youngest sister, was only three years old in 1971. The film's "where are they now" closing credits also didn't mention that Sheryl Yoast died when she was 34 years old in 1996.
Panettiere started her acting career before she was even one year old, appearing in commercials as a baby. She played Sarah Roberts on "One Life to Live" from 1994 to 1997 and Lizzie Spaulding on "Guiding Light" from 1996 to 2000 before appearing in "Remember the Titans."

Following "Remember the Titans," Panettiere starred in many films such as "Ice Princess," "Amanda Knox: Murder on Trial in Italy" and "Scream 4." She also had major roles in the shows "Heroes" from 2006 to 2010 and "Nashville" from 2012 to 2018.
Panettiere is also an activist and advocate. She is a supporter and board member of the Ronald McDonald House. She also took part in a protest against the hunting of dolphins in Japan in 2007, and was recognized by PETA for her activism work. She has also participated in protests against whale hunting around the globe.
Donald Faison (Running Back Petey Jones)
In the film, Petey Jones struggles as an offensive lineman. As a result, he attempts to leave the team after one game. Coach Yoast encourages Jones to play in a defensive role, but Jones quits after the position becomes challenging. Eventually, Jones returns to the team and receives his spot back on the field for the state championship game.
Before portraying Jones in "Remember the Titans," Faison had several roles in shows such as "Sabrina, The Teenage Witch" and "Clueless." He also played small roles in films throughout the 90s, including "Can't Hardly Wait," "Waiting to Exhale," and "Twelve Monkeys."
Donald Faison After the Film
After starring in "Remember the Titans," Donald Faison landed the role of Dr. Chris Turk in the medical comedy "Scrubs" from 2001–2010. He also appeared in the films "Uptown Girls" in 2003, "Something New" in 2006, and "Next Day Air" in 2009. Besides starring in films, Faison has appeared in music videos, including Gavin Degraw's "Chariot." Most recently, Faison's signature dance on Scrubs was added as a dance move option on the video game Fortnite.
Next up for Faison is a lead role in NBC's forthcoming show "Emergence," about a police chief, Jo (Allison Tolman), who gets drawn into a widespread conspiracy after adopting a child found at a crime scene. Faison is set to play the role of Jo's ex husband.
Gregory Alan Williams (Coach Paul Doc Hines)
Coach Paul Doc Hines worked at T.C. Williams High School for a few decades as an assistant and head coach. He motivated the football players by saying, "If you don't mind, then it don't matter." Hines was also known as a sociable person with a great laugh.
Gregory Alan Williams is best recognized for his work on "Baywatch" as LAPD officer Garner Ellerbee from 1989 to 1998, starring in 110 episodes in the show. Later in his career, Williams appeared in "The Game" in 2006 and "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" in 2007. Williams excelled in both movies and television shows. Williams also appeared in many films including "The Collector" in 2009 and "Terminator Genisys" in 2015. He has also stayed busy with writing since "Remember the Titans." Williams published two books: "Heart of a Woman" in 2009 and "Heart of a Woman: A Novel" in 2017.
Burgess Jenkins (Tight End Ray Budds)
Ray Budds's character is fictional. In the film, Ray Budds opposed the idea of an integrated team. He was also Gerry Bertier's best friend. The racist tight end player purposely made a violent move on the field, which caused Rev's injury. Sunshine and the rest of team condemned Budds's behavior, kicking him off the team.
Burgess Jenkins who portrayed Ray Budds went on to the films "The Reaping" with Hilary Swank in 2007 and "Wesley" with June Lockhart in 2009. In addition, he took on a television role as Bobby Irons on the CW series "One Tree Hill." Jenkins also made an appearance on "Nashville" where he worked with his past "Remember the Titans" co-star Hayden Panettiere. He moved on to star in "The Young and the Restless" as Billy Abbott in 2014. Jenkins's upcoming projects in 2019 include "Noelle," "The Mustard Seed," "First Lady" and "If You're Gone."
Brett Rice (Coach Herb Tyrell)
Herb Tyrell, portrayed by Brett Rice, ended his friendship with Coach Yoast because Yoast allowed his daughter, Sheryl, to play with Coach Boone's daughter in the movie. Tyrell told Yoast, "Sooner or later, a man's got to pick sides." Tyrell's character reflected the racial tensions that troubled the 1970s.
Rice has many great movies to his name. He was already an established actor when he joined "Remember the Titans," starring in films such as "Edward Scissorhands" in 1990, "Forrest Gump" in 1994 and "The Waterboy" in 1998. After acting in "Remember the Titans," Rice found numerous movie opportunities such as "Dear John" in 2010, "Super 8" in 2011, "Mom's Night Out" in 2014, and "Sully" in 2016. Aside from acting, Rice also joined SAG to serve as Councilor-at-Large, where he oversees politics and negotiations among producers in New York and Los Angeles.
Nicole Ari Parker (Carol Boone)
Parker had a small role in "Remember the Titans" as Carol Boone, Herman Boone's wife. She continued to act in films such as "Brown Sugar" (2002), "Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins" (2008), "Black Dynamite" (2009), and "Almost Christmas" (2016).
Parker also starred as attorney Teri Joseph in Showtime's drama "Soul Food" from 2000 to 2004 which earned her five NAACP Image Award nominations for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series. In 2017, she made an appearance on season four of "Empire" and was promoted to a series regular on season five.
Craig Kirkwood (Quarterback Jerry Rev Harris)
Jerry Rev Harris was the best quarterback on the team until he injured his wrist during the season. However, the team didn't have to worry, because Harris had taught his backups everything he knew. Harris eventually recovers and plays again at the state championship game.
After the film wrapped, Craig Kirkwood moved on to guest star in various TV series and took on small roles in films. However, he hasn't appeared in anything since 2006. Kirkwood stopped acting to focus on earning a law degree. He graduated from Loyola Law School in 2008 and after passing the California Bar Exam, Kirkwood is now a criminal defense attorney.
Kip Pardue (Quarterback Ronnie "Sunshine" Bass)
"Sunshine" gets his big opportunity within the team after Jerry Rev Harris' injury. In the film, Sunshine is portrayed with long, blonde hair. The real Ronnie Bass stated that his hair was never long, but that most of the other players on the team did have long hair. The film also includes a scene where Sunshine kisses his teammate Gerry Bertier. However, Bass revealed in the film's DVD commentary that the kiss never really happened.
The actor who played Ronnie Bass, Kip Pardue, went on to act in the films "Driven" in 2001 and "The Rules of Attraction" in 2002. On television, Pardue was featured in shows such as "ER," "Mad Men" and "Ray Donovan." In 2017, Pardue landed a role as a mainstay castmember for the Hulu series "Marvel: Runaways." His character in the show, Frank Dean, is an actor having trouble finding work — but his situation changes when he becomes the leader of the Church of Gibborim.
Earl C. Poitier (Offensive Lineman Darryl "Blue" Stanton)
In the film, Blue (portrayed by Earl C. Poitier) was the character who consistently motivated his fellow team members. Poitier took on many acting roles after starring in "Remember the Titans." In 2001, he was cast for a small role in the alien sci-fi TV series, "Roswell."
The majority of his later work was on TV series, such as "America's Most Wanted: America Fights Back" in 2011, "Graceland" in 2014, and "Bloodline" in 2015. His most recent projects include the film "Baywatch," where he played a kitchen worker, and the made for TV movie "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks."
